Les Triplettes de Belleville
The first full-featured animation from Sylvain Chomet, showcased at the 2003 Cannes Festival. I would describe it as a non-pretentious surrealist cartoon epic. Only it’s not so much epic as it is lyrical. A very touching story, absolutely superb drawing technique and characters that will get into your heart. I disagree with the other reviewers of the film, the story does in fact matter very much. It supports the characters, it charges the movie with so much tension you could actually see it sparkling and, overall, it has a major role in instituting the surrealist atmosphere mentioned before. A good choice for spending a Sunday afternoon. Here’s the IMDB link to the film.
